In wondering why diazepam is one of the most prescribed drugs in the world one has to look closely at its most widely used reason for being prescribed by doctors. In 1999 The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry finally decided to commission a survey as to the unreported statistics of anxiety related problems. By the time the survey was finished some staggering results were revealed. Over 50 million Americans where visiting their doctors each year complaining of a wide array of anxiety related disorders. Leading the charge were phobias with over 19 million people followed by social anxiety disorder which totaled approximately 15 million. Post traumatic stress disorder accounted for 7.8 million. 6.8 million People declared feelings of generalized anxiety disorder and 6 million reported having direct panic or anxiety attacks. In context of the above numbers diazepam information was used for the above study to find these approximate numbers. An even more interesting statistic is that these figures were compiled nearly a decade ago.
